In 2001, Mark Anthony A. Carpio was handpicked by National Artist, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion, to succeed her as the choirmaster of the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers. Leading this 42-year old
cultural institution may initially seem to be a daunting task but Mr. Carpio has indisputably risen to the challenge to continue the Madz’s impeccable and legendary legacy of choral excellence.
In hindsight, being the chosen one to lead the Philippine Madrigal Singers may just be the manifest destiny of Mr. Carpio, a role he unassumingly has been preparing for all this life. This boy soprano’s childhood and adolescent years were spent taking extensive lessons in piano and flute. Mr. Carpio entered the University of the Philippines College of Music as a scholar of the Music Promotion Foundation and of the Jovita Fuentes MusiCultural Society, majoring in piano. After graduating with honors in 1992, Mr. Carpio became a faculty member of the Piano Department of the University of the Philippines College of Music. It was during this time he started his lifelong love affair with the famed Philippine Madrigal Singers as an outstanding core group member and countertenor soloist. His involvement with the prizewinning choir led him to further studies in choral music. So entrenched is he that he is now a faculty member of the Choral Conducting Department.
Under Mr. Carpio's leadership, the Philippine Madrigal Singers has continued the tradition of embarking on successful concert tours in the United States & Canada (2002), Thailand (2003) and Korea (2004). That same year, they bagged the first prize awards in the Habanera and Polyphonic categories in Certamenes Internacional Habaneras y Polifonia held in
Torrevieja, Spain. Concert tours in 2005 include those to Thailand and the United States of America.
The growth and evolution of the Philippine Madrigal Singers continues with new standards of choral excellence set by Mark Anthony Carpio. And so his story goes on…
